LEDs also known as Light Emitting Diode technology has been around for quite a long time but using these LEDs for TV screens has only recently come about. In LCD TVs cold cathode fluorescent lamps are used to illuminate the TV's while in LED TVs those lamps are replace with lots of smaller LEDs.

There are two different types of LEDs, edge lit and full array lighting. Edge lit only uses LEDS around the edge or perimeter of the screen and full array lighting uses LEDS across the entire screen. Companies like Toshiba and Sharp use full array while other companies such as Sony, LG and Samsung use edge lit technology.

Edge lit televisions tend to be thinner and less expensive. Some of the older edge lit TVs actually had issues with uneven lighting around the corners although recently with the new Samsung UN55b8000 these problems have been resolved.

There are a few things you should consider when choosing an LED

1. Know the size of the area you will be placing the TV. Measure this area before purchasing anything.

2. Some LED Tvs have extra outputs like HDMI and ports to connect digital cameras. If you require this functionality this may change the model that you will buy.

3. If you are plugging in a DVD/Blueray or cable box you should double check to see that the correct inputs are available in the TV. Most major brand TV's will be compatible.

4. Compare a few different brands as they do have different picture quality and brightness levels. Sometimes this picture quality will change depending on the size of the LED TV.

Overall you need to be prepared and search around for the best deals on LED TV's . They are not becoming much more affordable and popular in many homes. The fact that they can be only 2 inches thick allows you to easily place them on walls and in locations that would otherwise be impossible with heavier plasma or ever LCD TV's.

One of the most popular LED TV's currently available on the market is the 55inch Samsung UN55B8000, this TV has remarkable picture quality and can be found for under $3000.
